Chapter One: Early Dismissal
Brad and Collin were excited. They were getting out of school two hours early. Snow was coming.
Brad and Collin lived near each other. They were best friends.
Collin had a car. Collin usually drove Brad home from school each day.
The boys got in Collin's car to head home.
"I hope we have a snow day tomorrow!" said Brad.
"Me too!" said Collin.
Brad had an idea.
"Collin, let's go get some junk food. I want chips!" said Brad.
Collin didn't think it was a good idea. His parents always said to drive straight home if the weather was bad.
Brad said, "Don't worry Collin. We have plenty of time. School got out early. The snow is light."
Collin said, "OK, but let's be fast."
Chapter Two: A Bad Choice
At the store, the boys bought chips and pop. Then Brad spotted some friends. They were all excited about getting out of school early.
Collin said, "Let's go Brad! We've been here for an hour. I’m worried about the snow."
Brad paid for his chips and pop. The snow was starting to pile up.
Collin started the car. Brad scraped off the windows. They were ready to go home. Collin called his mom to say they were on their way.
Collin's mom said, "Be careful. The roads are bad. Just bring Brad to our house. We can take him home later."
Collin told Brad, "We need to get going."
Collin started driving home. The main road in town was OK. The side road outside of town was OK.
The gravel road was bad. The snow had gotten heavy.
Collin's car was sliding. The snow was blowing everywhere.
Collin was nervous. Brad was nervous.
All of the sudden, Collin couldn't see anything. Collin's car slid off the road.
Chapter Three: Stuck
The car came to a stop.
"Whoa! That was scary!" said Brad.
"Are you OK?" asked Collin.
"Yep," said Brad.
"Me, too," said Collin. "My mom is going to be mad that I slid off the road!"
"I think she’ll understand." said Brad. “Let’s get out of here. She won’t be mad if we get home safely.”
Collin tried driving the car forward. The wheels just spun.
Collin tried driving the car backwards. The wheels just spun.
Collin told Brad to get out and push. Collin tried driving forward and Brad pushed. The wheels just spun. The snow was getting heavier.
Brad and Collin couldn't see anything.
